It calculates cost of materials based on either Auction House or Vendor prices (or can pick the best of the two).  It adds up the cost of all the materials and then compares it to the Auction House sale value of the crafted item.  It flags items that can be crafted and sold for a profit.

Obviously this requires that you also have an auction house mod that captures average prices.  It can use the AH prices from Auctioneer, AuctionLite, AuctionMaster or Auctionator.  As long as you have one of those, it can correctly identify profitable recipes.

Low levels should never expect to make gold by killing mobs. But that’s not the best way to make gold. Low level mobs drop low amounts of cash and lower value items. Why? Because of the GPH rate! High-level players could go to low-level areas and blitz. So Blizzard has to keep the high-speed drop rate down in line with the GPH rate of other high-level areas.

Also, until level 300-375 in a crafting profession, that profession will not be very profitable. The reason for this is that high-level players with lots of gold sometimes ‘power-level’ a new profession. In other words, they may drop skinning and take up alchemy. They buy all the mats needed to level the profession to 300 from the AH, make tons of potions to level it up, and dump them on the AH. They don’t care about making money on the potions…they just want to get back a little money. So they sell the potions for less than a low-level player could even make the potion in the first place. It drives me crazy that people sell crafted items for a loss, but they do. This makes it hard for lower-level players to profit with professions.

Having said all that, low-level players CAN make gold, and they can use the best method for making gold. They can still play the auction house. Here’s why: Blizzard is NOT in charge of what people are willing to pay. Someone will always be in a hurry to make a little money and sell an item cheap, but fast. Someone else might be willing to pay above the normal price because they want the item RIGHT NOW!

I recently talked to a player who was a very low level. They had only been playing WoW for a couple of weeks. After reading the guide, they sold the herbs that were sitting in their bank, and made 2g over night. Even a level 5 with 2g can start turning that into more, without killing mobs or traveling around. Recently I bought an enchanting recipe (Frost Protection on Shield)…I paid 3g for it and sold it for 53g! Can you imagine a level 10 with 53g! It CAN happen…just not in the way that people usually think.

FACT #5 – Low levels CAN make gold by playing the AH much faster than by any other method.

The important thing to note is that low-level toons can catch these fish. They are found in the Barrens. Easy enough if you’re horde. If you’re alliance, you might need some help getting there. But imagine a low-level toon spending an evening fishing and stacking up 40 or so of these things. Very few level 10 toons are running around with that much gold.

For any level, if you have the recipe, it’s a simple matter of buying out the supplies for 35s each, cooking them, and relisting them for 50s each. (Ok…you need Mild Spices, too, but those are cheap). Heck…if you buy them all out, try listing them higher.

/enchantrix percentless (percent)

/enchantrix bidbroker (silver)

The (percent) is the percentage of the discount…in other words the percentage you can save by buying out this item now. The (silver) is the amount in silver you want to profit from your bid. So, percentless is for buyouts, bidbroker is for bids. As an example: /enchantrix percentless 70 will return items that DE into an average value of 1g, but the items currently have a 29s buyout. Buy the item, DE it, and sell the mats. For another example: /enchantrix bidbroker 200 will return items that DE into mats worth 2g more than what the bid is. You may get outbid on some things but you might also win some!

The GREAT thing about this is that it takes far less capital to start accumulating than Auctioneer does. I’ve been doing this on a low-level (11) toon to test it out. He’s been buying items for 6-10s and turning them into mats that sell for 25-95s. I don’t know about you, but for a low level toon, that’s a fast way to acquire enough silver to become several gold! Do this a few times, and you’ll have a bankroll big enough to start bidding on the more expensive and profitable items in the AH!

Now that you’ve done those steps, you’re ready to use the rest of this site to start making gold. Pay special attention to the Auction House page, as this will be your main strategy. But also become familiar with the sites listed in the Tools page, as that will help you learn what you need to know to become an expert at making gold in WoW!

As proof that even a lowbie can do this, let me illustrate by telling you about two deals I made this week! I bought a Large Glowing shard for 1s. I sold it for 1g 25s. I found this deal by using Auctioneer. Even a LOWBIE can spend 1s to make 1g!! Another deal just this week was the Feet of the Lynx. They are level 19 blue boots, that I bought for 56s. I sold them for 35g!!
