If you’ve been playing WoW and don’t know about thottbot.com, you’ve been missing out. It is an automatically updated database of all things World of Warcraft. Volunteer players turn on an add-on which records data about NPCs, Items, Quests, etc., and they can upload it to the site. (http://www.thottbot.com) Information for an item that can be easily accessed includes: how many in a stack, where they drop, what percentage a mob drops that item, how much a vendor sells it for, where the mobs can be found on the map that drop the item, what recipes it’s used in if any. In addition, players can make comments about it at the bottom of each page, which can help clarify information. The ‘disenchants into’ information is notoriously wrong. But the rest of it is really good stuff. It also helps with quests, to know what links are in a chain. That can be helpful to determine whether or not a quest is worth keeping, because you can evaluate if the end reward is worth it. Basically, just go check it out. It’s searchable, and it’s the standard for WoW players to check information there. It even does stuff like plot out spawn points on a map for you to look for your gathering professions.

It became a game within the game, to see how much gold we could make, and what deals we could find. Once this site was created, other friends started contributing ideas. We finally converted it to a blog in December 2007 to make it easier to update. We would have done it sooner, but we were too busy playing WoW...
